After 13 Years of Consistent Hard Work, He Finally Gets the Opportunity to Showcase His Talent on a Big Stage

Mumbai’s explosive opening batsman Sahil Kocharekar has been making waves in the cricketing world. He has been directly signed by the Rajasthan Ravagers for the upcoming 66 Super League. This move comes after Kocharekar’s impressive and consistent performances, which have caught the attention of the scouting team. His remarkable performances over the years earned him a spot in the prestigious tournament, which features international stars and IPL players.
Sahil has been performing at a high level for the past 13 years, continuously proving his skills as a batter. His recent explosive innings, where he scored 130 runs off 44 balls and hit 6 sixes in an over in a different match, have made him one of the most talked-about players in the circuit.
The 66 Super League, a tournament played with 66 balls per side, is a platform where established and emerging talents get the chance to showcase their abilities. With top-tier players from IPL and international cricket participating, the league is the perfect stage for Sahil to make a mark. This opportunity could be a stepping stone for him to further his cricketing career, potentially leading to the IPL.
The management of Rajasthan Ravagers expressed their excitement, saying, “Sahil Kocharekar is a game-changer for our team. His aggressive batting style and consistent form will be a major asset to our lineup. We are confident he will be one of the top performers in the league.”
Speaking about this opportunity, Sahil said, “This is a huge opportunity for me. After 13 years of hard work, I finally have the chance to prove myself on a bigger stage. I will give my best in the 66 Super League and work towards securing a place in the IPL.”
Following this announcement, excitement has been building among Mumbai’s local cricket fans and enthusiasts, who are eager to see Sahil’s explosive batting style in action on such a prominent platform.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma said that it was “heart-breaking” for the team to have to release some of their key players ahead of the mega auction. The five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions announced on Tuesday that they had retained Rohit, batsman Suryakumar Yadav, all-rounder Kieron Pollard and fast bowler Trent Boult ahead of the mega-auction.

It meant that they had to let go of Ishan Kishan, Hardik and Krunal Pandya and pace spearhead Trent Boult, all of whom were integral to their run to a fifth title in 2020.

“As you all know, it was going to be the toughest retention for Mumbai Indians this year. We have had solid players, absolutely gun players in our squad and to release them is absolutely heart-breaking,” Rohit said after the retentions were announced.

“They have done some amazing work for this franchise, created a lot of memories. So, to let them go was really tough. Four players including myself – hopefully we can form a good core and create a solid team around us,” he said.

Rohit said that the team will be looking to build a core again in the auction. While the dates for the auction have not been announced yet, it is expected to take place in January.

“The immediate goal is to form a solid team and that will start at the auction. We’ll keep an eye on who we can get in the auction, find the right spot for the right players. So yeah, our scouts are doing a fantastic job, watching talents in and outside India. I have faith and belief in them. They have done an amazing job over the years finishing talent. Hopefully we can find some players that can form a good core,” added Rohit.

On September 16, 2011, when Rahul Dravid fell to Graeme Swann for 69 and started the walk back to the pavilion for the last time in ODIs, a young man at the other end was batting on 107. While an illustrious career came to an end amid a rousing applause, another one was taking wings. Virat Kohli, full of youthful exuberance, had just hit his 6th ODI hundred and was heralded as one of the players to watch out for the future.

On January 24, 2012, Rahul Dravid walked in to play his last Test match for India against Australia. It was a horror series – India would go on to be blanked 4-0 but even as Rahul Dravid completed his services to Indian cricket after 16 years and 164 Tests, Virat Kohli, the unapologetic and brash boy from Delhi, decided it was time to announce his intent in the oldest format of the game – against a bowling attack studded with Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus and Nathan Lyon, Kohli smashed 116, his maiden hundred in Test cricket.

Over the years, while Rahul Dravid retreated in the shadows and went to work with the abundant raw talent from across India, Virat Kohli went to work on some of the best bowling attacks across the world. Kohli broke records, destroyed bowlers, scored hundreds, sledged and tamed Australia in Australia.

Rapidly, Virat Kohli etched his name in stone among the greatest in the game. Such was Kohli’s dominance on Indian cricket, no one would dare question his decision-making. The king’s word was final.

Rahul Dravid was happy to assume his seat at the back of the room and the assembly line of supremely competent cricketers became an envy for the rest of the world. Two men, starkly different from the other, were doing their bit for Indian cricket. One of them admitted he cringed at some statements the other made before a series but if that worked for the captain and the team, it was all well.

Nearly a decade after Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli last shared space in the Indian dressing-room, the two will reunite as coach and captain. India are in the middle of a home Test series but the first match provided enough evidence that this contest was beginning to turn into a stiff challenge. The hosts were without 6 of their regulars in the first Test but with the return of their dynamic captain, the cavalry will be ready for a charge against New Zealand, worthy opponents and World Test champions.

India is a dangerous team in Test cricket. When Virat Kohli officially took over as captain after MS Dhoni’s sudden retirement several summers back in Australia, he was clear how he wanted his men to play. A pace battery ready to shock and awe unsuspecting opposition batsmen was forged and Kohli, reaching the peak of his powers, led from the front and walked the talk. Mistakes were made in England, New Zealand and South Africa but historic series were won in Sri Lanka, West Indies and Australia.

India were always a strong team at home but under Virat Kohli, visiting teams learnt it was good enough to not be rolled over – winning a Test match was a distant dream.

In the last decade, India have lost only two Tests at home – against Australia in 2017 and England in 2021. But Virat Kohli and his bowlers found a way to bounce back and win those series.

Last week in Kanpur, New Zealand harboured hopes of victory. And then India fought back thanks to a debutant who created history with the bat and three spinners who spun a web around the Black Caps and an ageing wicketkeeper determined to make his mark as a batsman. But a late declaration and an inexplicably conservative approach towards the end of the fourth day put paid to India’s wish – a big win over New Zealand, who have now been a painful thorn in their way.

Why did India not take the new ball in the last hour of the Test? Could their spinners have done more with a fresh cherry on a pitch that had not deteriorated as dramatically as the hosts would have liked?

Ajinkya Rahane, who was standing in as captain because Virat Kohli was on a short break, has not lost a Test match under his leadership yet. But the whispers over his form and continued presence in the playing eleven had turned into loud questions by the time he was dismissed for 35 and 4 in the opening Test. Was his captaincy affected by that chorus gaining momentum? The team management presented a strong defence for the beleaguered Rahane, but the opportunity to win another Test match without the superstars was lost.

As Virat Kohli links up with the rest of the India squad in Mumbai, he will need to take several calls, the first of which could be on Ajinkya Rahane, his long-serving deputy in Tests. Who does Kohli replace in the middle-order. Shreyas Iyer with scores of 105 and 65 in Kanpur, became the first India batter to score a hundred and a fifty on Test debut. Should he make way for the skipper or should a senior player who has failed in his role at No.5 for much of 2020 and all of 2021 instead be asked to sit out?

Rahul Dravid and his support staff have backed Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara ahead of the second Test but under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, both men have been dropped at different junctures. Will there be a conflict of tactics and attitudes? Who will prevail? Captain or coach?

Then there’s the looming question over the pacers. The Green Park surface was no easy surface to bowl on and even the spinners had to toil hard but Ishant Sharma’s lack of sting hurt the hosts who faced precision from Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson. Mohammad Siraj for Ishant Sharma? Questions and more questions for Messrs Kohli and Dravid.

Then there’s the question of approach. Even without Virat Kohli, India had R Ashwin to front up to the umpires over technical issues, this and that. But with Kohli in the mix, it is a wholly different story. No umpire, especially at home, is ever free of pressure when the India captain is not entirely pleased with on-field decisions.

When Rohit Sharma and Dravid, and later Ajinkya Rahane and Dravid, addressed press conferences at the start of the T20I and Test series, you perhaps saw some smiles – a few light moments were allowed to slip through ahead of crucial contests. Kohli and Ravi Shastri had their own ways of dealing with the media. Not far removed from the tactical calls Kohli and Dravid will need to make, it will be interesting to see how they come across in their first media interaction together. Ravi Shastri was ready to acknowledge the captain as the boss of the team. Dravid has made no such acknowledgement.

The reunion of Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli has the makings of a beautiful sub-plot in Indian cricket. Both men are devoted to the cause and neither man has been known to back down from a good challenge; they have their own ways but that’s what makes the game so enthralling.
